Door hardware

For this table, spring hinges and gravity hinges do not count as closers. Select the hardware actually present.

Checks use exact inch dimensions: 1 in = 25.4 mm. Switching units preserves the entered measurement.

With the door open 90°, measure between its face and the opposite stop. This is not the nominal door leaf width.

This changes the separate clear-opening minimum from 32 in to 36 in. Leaving it unchecked assumes an opening no more than 24 in deep.

Three measurements, different purposes.

Start where the person approaches

Stand on the face being checked. Establish whether the door opens towards or away from you, then identify the direction from which someone reaches it. Check the other usable direction separately.

Mark a clear floor rectangle

Measure depth perpendicular to the closed door. Measure the extra width beyond the indicated jamb. Most choices need latch-side space; a hinge-side push approach needs its extension beyond the hinge.

Measure the usable opening

Open the door to 90° and measure from the face of the leaf to the opposing stop. A 32 in (812.8 mm) clear opening is the usual minimum; an opening deeper than 24 in requires 36 in (914.4 mm).

The planner follows ADA 2010 Table 404.2.4.1 for manual swinging doors, including its four footnotes and both hinge-side pull alternatives. Clear opening is a separate §404.2.3 check.

US customary values are converted exactly here. The standard also prints rounded metric equivalents; those are not substituted into this calculation.

Watch for recesses and obstacles

Furniture, a thick wall or a column can change the available approach. If an obstruction projects more than 8 in within 18 in of the latch, review the front-approach requirement in §404.2.4.3. Door pairs in series need their own assessment.
